Feeding, Weaning and Health

Feeding and Weaning

  1. From birth momma nurses the pups.

  2. Around 3 weeks of age the weaning transition process begins.

  3. Feeding using 4 Health dry puppy food  mixed with warm water made very soupy.  Also started drinking fresh water at this time.  The feeding is supplemented with momma’s limited nursing throughout the day.

  4. 4th through 5th week food is gradually made less wet of a gruel, with dry kibble scattered for them in kennel.

  5. By 6th week mostly moist food with dry kibble is provided. Still are nursing with momma whenever they want.

  6. You can purchase 4 Health at Tractor Supply Store it is the same as Blue Wilderness. I have used 4 Health for years, it is nutritional and packed full of vitamins.

  7. If you decide you will be switching dog food, please allow 7-10 days for the transition.  Gradually add more of the other brand and less of the 4 Health to your dog’s dish each day until the changeover is complete.  This gradual change transition will help avoid dietary upsets.

  8. Feed pups (to six months of age) all the puppy brand dog food they will consume in intervals throughout the day.  Growing puppies need up to twice as much food per pound of their body weight.

  9. Always provide lots of fresh clean water; it should always be available to your dog.

  10.  Feeding adult dog –

Most adult dogs can be fed once daily.  However, when high activity or other factors create a higher feed intake, twice a day feeding is recommended.  (I feed my dogs once in the morning, and once in the evening). Dogs should be maintained in ideal body conditions and not allowed to become overweight.  The food intake required to maintain ideal body weight will vary, depending on age, activity and environment.  Consequently, the amount of food required for each dog will vary and should be adjusted accordingly.

WELLNESS CHECK

  •  The puppies will be given a Wellness check-up and a worming dose by 8 weeks of age.

  • Vaccinations will have been given so their shots are all current and up to date.

  • Puppies are provided a clean bill of health from our vet technicians.

  • I recommend that you to set up an appointment with your vet the week you take your puppy home. I would suggest booking that appointment 2 weeks in advance of picking up your  puppy.

  • Most veterinary businesses offer complete puppy wellness packages.
